Exotic Spiny Oysters add texture & allure

Exotic shell beads - one of Island Cove's specialties

Meet the spiny oyster. It's one of the reasons Island Cove has such a loyal following among both local and visiting leaders. The quality of seashells available in the gallery is top notch. One of the "fan faves" is the stunning spiny oyster shell, or spondylus. This colorful shell definitely makes a statement with its spins or thorns, and can be found in shades of orange, red, purple, and white.

Because it is so exotic, it has been a collector's dream for centuries. Surprisingly, archeologists have even found spiny oyster shells in Europe. They believe they were harvested from the Aegean Sea and carved into bangle bracelets and belt buckles in 4500 BC. These special shells were found in early Peruvian and Ecuadorian art, and traded as currency with neighboring Mexico. With such history, it's no surprise that Americans are drawn to this unique shell too.

Drop on into Island Cove Beads & Gallery to check out the collection of Spiny Oyster beads, cabochons, and finished jewelry. Pick a strand of shell beads or a single piece to create your own special design.
